| The Basics |
Character Name: Hestia Jones PB: Lauren Graham Age: 30 Birthday: August 9 Wand: Eleven inches long and made of dark cherrywood, with crushed faerie’s wings as its core. She identified with it so strongly because she possesses qualities that are very much like a faerie’s—playful, bubbly, chipper and carefree. House in School: Hufflepuff Bloodline: Muggleborn Political View: Hestia is an extremely left wing sort of individual. She’s very liberal and open to all kinds of things, but she also believes strongly in values like justice and integrity. She is willing to fight for what she believes in, and that is why she joined the Order straightaway and stuck with it until the very end. |
| Appearance |
Height: 5'5" Weight: about 130 or 140 Eyes: They’re hazel in colour, and are notorious for revealing her emotions. Hestia is no Occlumens—one of her more prominent troubles is that she wears her heart on her sleeve. Hair: As described in canon, Hestia has black hair, and she keeps it shoulder-length for two reasons. One, because it gets in the way when she plays Quidditch. Two, she kept it short when she was an auror because it was just too dangerous for it to be long. Build: She’s not rail thin, but not chubby, either. Right in the middle. Dress Style: One of the major ways that Hestia defines herself is through the way she dresses. Being a witch, she has to wear robes at formal places such as the Ministry of Magic, but anywhere outside of that, she flagrantly displays her eclectic tastes. One day, she’ll be wearing ripped jeans and t-shirts depicting bands that no one’s ever heard of, and the next, she’ll garb herself in loudly-coloured skirts, sunglasses, scarves, leg warmers, and arm bands—even if it’s a rainy day in the middle of summer. She wears jelly bracelets because she enjoys chewing on them, and always wears one necklace with a tarnished, silver ring on it. (The ring is a family heirloom and it never comes off.) Hestia strives to make things bright in as many ways as she can. Her clothing style is but one of the tools she utilizes to fill her world with colour. Basic Physical Description: Hestia is generally mediocre in appearance, but in no way does she give off the impression of being mediocre. She makes herself stand out, often without trying to, and is the sort of person that people are drawn to—solely because of her aura of friendliness and the empathic kindness that’s always shining in her eyes. |
| Personality |
Hestia is an optimist. She’s always looking for that one ray of sunshine, no matter how dark the skies are, and is constantly endeavoring to raise others’ spirits. She is not the type to offer wooden smiles and plastic reassurances in tense situations. No matter how bleak things are, she seeks out the good in the circumstance and thrives on it, uses it as her strength to give others strength. Thus said, she is not the type to bottle herself up for the sake of making others comfortable. Hestia is very free with her emotions and has no qualms with sharing them with other people. Though it isn’t her intention to “spill her guts” or to start “drama”, she often gives off that impression, solely because of how much she reveals about herself. Mindless cruelty, violence, and hatred, though most certainly not beyond her comprehension, tend to sadden her. Even though Hestia was an auror for many, many years, the sight of death never once ceased to rattle her. The realization that people actually have the capacity to take lives deeply upsets her, but it also angers her, and that anger, along with the desire to stop those kinds of people, was her motivation for fighting crime for so many years. She is stronger than she appears on the outside. One would think, with her temperament, that she would be thin-skinned and unable to step up to everyday pressures. This is, and is not the case. Hestia does offend easily, but she is amazingly resilient. She always finds a way to get herself up on her feet, dust herself off, and carry on. If something tragic happens, well, it’s just a pie in the face in the big, slapstick show of life. And the slapstick show isn’t funny if you can always see the pies coming, is it? Sometimes, Hestia can be obstinate, especially when she’s angry. She’ll apologize for it later, but Heaven help you if she’s in a mood, because if something truly makes her upset-and it could be something as sporadic as some celebrity affair-she’ll stalk about, cussing like a sailor and generally being frightening. This rarely happens, though, but even the most pacifistic of individuals can have their moments. Hestia is a very, very artistic individual. She is constantly doodling something, little butterflies among the pages of her diary, ladybugs and birds on her auror paperwork. Drawing helps her focus, and she sees everything in bright colour. Though going on thirty-one, she has no qualms with wearing bright oranges, yellows, and pinks, and paints cartoonish images on her walls in her apartment. Her cubicle at the Ministry of Magic was littered with a conglomeration of photographs, drawings, and scraps torn from newspapers and magazines. A place just isn’t home to her unless she decorates it in some way. She loves all sorts of music, wizarding or muggle, British, American, Japanese, and German. She hates solo songstresses like Celestina Warbeck, but she enjoys hard rock like the Weird Sisters and loves strange bands that most people have probably never even heard of. Though she can’t really use them in wizarding London, she does own a huge pair of DJ headphones, which she decorates with brightly coloured stickers. Her CD and tape collection is obnoxiously huge and very eclectic. She prefers dogs to cats because dogs are more personable. Cats are nice and all, but it’s just too hard to tell if they love you, she thinks. Her favourite past-time is making clothes and purses, whether it be from random scraps of cloth or from old, tatty robes she hasn’t touched in years. She hopes to open a wizarding-slash-muggle boutique one day. Fiercely loyal to her friends, family, and beliefs, yet empathic and compassionate to the core, Hestia is Hufflepuff, through and through. |
| Psychology |
Extrovert/Introvert:EXTROVERT. Hestia loves people. She is a naturally empathic individual who is always on the lookout for other people and their needs, comfort, and emotional well being. She has absolutely no problem with sharing her emotions and does so frequently, spilling all, occasionally too much. Boggart Would Be: Hestia’s boggart is the image of a dead phoenix—the very symbol of hope gone. Patronus Would Be: A dog. Dogs are loving, trusting animals, generally happy, and yet if the situation arises, can be positively vicious and fearsome, no matter how mild their temperament. |
| Sexuality |
Hestia’s essentially straight, but in no way is she a homophobe. She’s open to the possibility that her soulmate could be a female, but she’s attracted to members of the opposite sex and generally only leans towards men. Though vaguely curious about women, she isn’t quite curious enough to want to experiment. She listens to her heart. |
| Lifestyle |
Occupation: Hestia was an auror for eight years. Shortly after the war, however, she quit that particular occupation because she was sick of the politics involved in working for the Ministry. She retreated back into the muggle industry for awhile and worked full-time at a music store, but eventually she returned to the wizarding lifestyle and now earns her salary waitressing at the Leaky Cauldron. Residence: Hestia keeps up a one-bedroom flat in muggle London, just outside of Diagon Alley, so she can both indulge in muggle comforts and be close to her family. Financial Status: She isn’t doing as well as she did as an auror, but she’s not at all saddened by it and is quite content with her current lifestyle. It’s a bit annoying paying such high rent on her little flat, but it isn’t as bad as it could be. |
| Family |
Parents: Hestia’s parents, Carl and Ellen Jones, are muggle restaurant entrepreneurs. Siblings: Her brothers, Dean and Alex, work in said family restaurant as they attempt to work their way through college. Hestia is the only magical one in her whole family. Of course, the family was very shocked when Hestia, the youngest and only daughter, turned out to be a witch. However, they quickly grew to accept it, and encouraged and nurtured her magical talent. Throughout the whole war, Hestia was terrified that something would happen to her parents or brothers, but fortunately, nothing did. |
| History from student days at Hogwarts to the present time |
When Hestia received the letter inviting her to come and attend classes at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, naturally it came as a huge shock to her entire family. She was terrified, when she actually started going there, but her resilient nature allowed her to quickly conform to her new surroundings and make lots of friends. She became very popular very quickly, and her position as a Chaser on the Hufflepuff quidditch team only served to enhance that popularity. She was never once “stuck up” about her blessings, however, she always did her best to be courteous and kind to other people, and also managed to pull off good marks most of the time. Come fifth year, she began wondering what she wanted to do for a living, and was actually coaxed by Professor Sprout to pursue Auror training. Being just at heart and a natural leader, Hestia warmed to the suggestion and worked very hard her sixth and seventh years, taking on the necessary courses and retreating into an almost Ravenclaw set of mind to become eligible for Auror training. Thus said, she didn’t pass the tests her first run through. Nor her second. Or her third. She never gave up, though. She kept trying until she finally passed on her fifth attempt. It was not long at all before she became a fairly respectable auror…nowhere near the ranks of Moody, of course, but nonetheless, she did well. When the second War began, Hestia was instantly drawn towards Dumbledore and his Order because she was shocked at the utter lack of integrity that existed in the Ministry, and was more than willing to help out in any way, shape or form, even at great personal risk to her career. Her fear for her muggle family also spurred this decision. As the War progressed, it became harder and harder for her to find her sun in the darkness, to find her hope when at times, things were so bleak, even she was overrun by despair. She witnessed death after death after death, and though she tried her hardest to keep her head up, it steadily became too difficult. Nearly overcome by hopelessness and despair, the end of the war came as a huge, HUGE relief for her. Hestia claims she quit being an Auror for political reasons, but that’s just an excuse to cover up her real reason for leaving. What that reason was? Fear. A world without hope is beyond Hestia’s comprehension, and she never wants to experience that kind of despondency again. It’s why she’s retreated into the muggle world. She’s afraid. |
